Marymount International School London - Academics
Marymount International School - London

Academics

Marymount International School London is an International Baccalaureate World School. Authorized as an IB school in 1979, Marymount was the first all-girls school in the UK to adopt the Diploma programme. The Middle Years Programme was adopted in 1997. This internationally acclaimed programme is recognised globally by universities as a benchmark of quality in education.

Students in the Middle School and the first two years of High School, Grades 6-10 (11-16 years), follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. The IB Diploma Programme is offered to students in Grades 11 and 12 (16-18 years).

In addition to their IB qualifications, all students graduate with a Marymount High School Diploma. We are very proud of our students’ achievements.

Middle School

Students in the Middle School (Grades 6-8, ages 11-14) follow the first three years of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, a balanced and comprehensive student-centred curriculum.

All twelve subjects are fully integrated with the IB MYP ‘Areas of Interaction’, five interdisciplinary themes (Approaches to Learning, Community Service, Environments, Human Ingenuity (Homo Faber), Health and Social Education) that help each student to understand her place in the world and her responsibility for its future.

Middle School studies at Marymount aim to promote healthy physical, emotional and spiritual growth as well as solid academic progress. A ‘hands-on’ approach, stressing exploration and discovery rather than rote learning, strengthens teamwork, encourages self-reliance, awakens intellectual curiosity and fosters global awareness. Small class-sizes allow effective teaching and ensures that individual needs – and expectations – are met.

Regular homework assignments allow study skills to be put into practice: students learn to manage time efficiently, follow instructions accurately, and treat topics resourcefully. Progress is monitored by a dedicated team of specialist teachers under the Middle School Co-ordinator’s leadership.

High School

In Grades 9-12 (ages 15 – 18) students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (Grades 9-10) and the IB Diploma Programmes (Grades 11-12). This course is designed specifically to meet the varying needs of both our UK and international student body and each girl receives an individually tailored timetable. Students receive expert personal, academic, careers and college guidance from sympathetic and highly trained counsellors. We also fulfil the requirements of the American College Preparatory Courses, for entry to US Universities.

All students in Grades 11-12 follow International Baccalaureate courses. Almost all participate in the IB Diploma programme, which requires, in addition to six academic subjects chosen from the five main areas, three mandatory components: the completion of an Extended Essay involving original research, an assessed course in Theory of Knowledge, and a documented extra-curricular programme of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS).

This internationally acclaimed Diploma Programme is recognised globally by universities as a benchmark of quality in education.

Many North American colleges grant course credits or advanced placement to IB students, and the award of an IB Diploma is a recognized qualification for admission to British universities, which increasingly value its unique combination of breadth and depth, formal subject knowledge and independent research skills, as ‘offering the best pre-university course currently available’.
