Transcending Global Boundaries - Marymount’s Links to the United Nations

Marymount International School London’s school year had an exciting start as the students learned of the school’s special connection to the United Nations.

Marymount is part of a network of schools around the world founded over a century ago by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM). In 2006, the RSHM gained Non-governmental organisation (NGO) status at the United Nations. In September the School welcomed Sr Rita Arthur, the RSHM non-governmental representative to the UN, as a guest speaker at morning assembly. Sr Rita has been elected to the DPI/NGO Executive Committee, and most recently served on the Planning Committee for the 61st Annual DPI/NGO Conference commemorating the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Sr Rita lead the school in a discussion on the UN Millennium Development Goals and how the Marymount network of schools’ goals are so similar to those of the UN. Marymount London has chosen to concentrate on the goal of “Social Justice” this year and each year group will review how they can link their work, through both academic and service projects, to that of the UN. Sr Rita met students throughout the day and made special connections with the school’s Model United Nations group as well as the leaders of the student newspaper.

Marymount International School London aims to educate young women to become the global leaders of tomorrow and follows the vision of its founders, ‘that all may have life.’ We were delighted to have Sr Rita as our guest and look forward to developing our connections further.
