Student Leadership

Student Council

The Student Council is one of the many ways in which students are encouraged to contribute to the life of our community. This student run organisation consists of two student representatives from each Grade and has four student officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer).

Members of the Student Council participate in specialist leadership training prior to taking on their role and are encouraged to develop and exercise their leadership skills throughout the year as they fulfil their place both as role models and ‘the voice’ of their peers. The Student Council meet weekly in their mission to make valuable contributions to the quality of school life through the sharing of student issues and ideas and taking action where appropriate.

The Student Council also organises extra-curricular activities which serve to promote cooperation and unity within the student body. Annual events include International day, Halloween and Spirit Week.

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) members are chosen by the faculty and have to show excellence in four areas: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. The NHS is active in fundraising and help with peer tutoring. Every year the National Honor Society helps raise funds to send two Grade 11 students on a Community Service trip to Lourdes to work with handicapped children.

Boarders' Council

The Boarders’ Council consists of elected members. The function of the Council is to act as the voice of the boarding students in relation to boarding life, ideas and developments. These young leaders are responsible for bringing to the attention of the Houseparent Team any feedback on specific boarding issues, and in planning, organising and presenting celebrations, dinners and the start of year orientation programme.

Houses

The aim of the House System is to develop a sense of identity and cohesion through a spirit of friendly rivalry and competition.

Every member of the community, students and staff, is allocated to one of four Houses. The Houses are aligned vertically through the school community with each House containing students from each year group as well as a cross section of teachers, staff and administrators. The names of the Houses are taken from the founders of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM): St Jean, St Croix, St Constance and St Felix, and have been assigned colours and symbols which are representative of unity, compassion, determination and loyalty. The symbols themselves are components of the school badge, thus, when brought together underneath the cross of the RSHM the school becomes whole.

Students remain affiliated to the same House throughout their time at Marymount. Each House has representatives from every Grade and are led by a House Captain, selected from Grade 11, House Vice-Captain, selected from Grade 10 , and a Middle School House Captain, selected from Grade 8.

There are several House Events throughout the academic year, related to various aspects of school life i.e. sports, drama, music, academic challenges etc.

Every House Event carries with it a designated number of house points, which are awarded according to levels of participation and outcome. House points are also awarded to individual students throughout the year for exceptional contribution to school community. A running total is announced at Assembly and published at regular intervals via TWAM (This Week at Marymount, weekly email communication to all parents, staff and students).
