Careers Fair

For Grade 11 students, the thought of university being around the corner is frightening – even more so for Grade 12 students. However, the earlier we are able to identify a career path we narrow that vastness of uncertainty. I figured that if I am going through this phase of indecision and uncertainty of what the future holds, other students are also experiencing the same difficulties; the idea for organising a Careers Fair was generated from this initial reflection.

On Saturday 27th January, around 70 students from both Marymount and Tiffins Boys School attended the Careers Fair, participating in four different workshops. In the workshops students were inspired by guest speakers about their career journey, with genuine personal insight and advice given and the opportunity to ask questions. We had the pleasure of hosting the MP for Wimbledon Stephen Hammond, Dr Nyiati Lobo, sports journalist Jane McManus, Stage Manager for War Horse Ms Holly Morgan, Dr Tahira Akram, Financial Consultant Mr George King, Director for OnAir Strategy at Discovery Channel Ms Lottie McNamara and Ms Wupya Nandap, a Corporate Lawyer. All presentations were informative and exciting, and it was particularly interesting to hear Marymount alumnae speak of their experiences post-school. The presentations left every student with a new perspective of approaching a working life in that profession; I know I left the lecture room of Ms McManus with very different ideas about journalism.
