The Hague MUN – Student reflections

Reflections from

“The trip opened my eyes to how the UN worked.  Within my committee I made several new, internationally-diverse friends, allowing me to learn more about different cultures while sharing my own. The research itself into the specific topics that my committee was covering intrigued me and allowed me, after scrutinizing the issues during the lengthy yet absorbing daily debates, to understand our global situation from a more detailed perspective.”

“Throughout the debates, I was able to learn more about the different issues and the varied perspectives of the many nations in the UN. This event was challenging at first since it is really important to represent your country’s views rather than your own. Furthermore, the first day of lobbying can be tough due to the fact that you are in a room full of strangers, trying to make alliances in order to co-submit a resolution based on similar ideals.”

“You have to know how to write an entire speech, within five minutes, from scratch. You need to have the courage to voice your opinion. You need to possess the capacity to work with those around you – and work well. But if you do not feel like you have yet these skills, THIMUN is the perfect place to develop them. I had never been in an MUN environment before, so being thrown into a room with three hundred other people, all intellectually strong and passionate about MUN, I was in the best place to learn. I found the whole process fascinating, and being at the root of where global issues are debated and resolved has made me look at the world differently. The THIMUN trip in the Hague has been one of the most invigorating and enriching experiences of my life and my only regret is that I did not sign up last year.”
