Think big, think beyond - Marymount International School London

Think big, think beyond

One of our School goals is to promote lifelong learning, and there’s nothing like learning from the experience of our Alumnae.

In late January and early February 2021, Marymount Alumnae were invited to Zoom into Grade 12 PSHEE lessons to encourage them to “think big, think beyond”. This series of Alumnae talks brings together Marymount girls, past and present, to discuss and demystify life beyond Graduation.

The talks tackled important issues such as sexism in the workplace and crafting careers from (seemingly) polarised passions, but also answered everyday questions like “what was your first client meeting like?” and “did you always know what you wanted to do?”. These discussions gave Grade 12 food for thought when reflecting on where life might take them after Marymount.

Each Alumna was asked to share a ‘top tip’ with Grade 12, and here is what they said:

  1. Be confident, you are better prepared for life beyond Marymount than most: not everyone has the great skills the IB teaches you.
  2. Just because the ideal job for you doesn’t exist yet, doesn’t mean you can’t be the first in that job.
  3. If you love something, keep learning about it.
  4. The only certainty in life is uncertainty – resilience is a skill that needs practice and will help you through.
  5. Remember that you can do anything you put your mind to.
  6. Once a Marymount girl, always a Marymount girl – the friends you make at School are with you for life!

“Every tool I’ve used in my career is something I learnt at Marymount. If I’ve done it, you can do it, too.”

“I particularly enjoyed knowing how the journey to get where you want to be might not necessarily be easy, but it is rewarding. It made me think more on what academic or individual profile I’d like to build for myself in the future, to get to where I want to be.”

I enjoyed hearing about how Sofia found her way into her perfect ‘niche job’ that combines both of her areas of interest, and the not-so-clear path she took to get to where she was as it was not laid out in front of her when starting her professional career. It showed me that not all things need to be planned out to the very end, you just need to know what your strengths are.
