Marymount celebrated Chemistry Month in line with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s annual Chemistry Week, which ran from 4 – 10 November. Inspired by the 2024 theme ‘Chemistry is Shaping the Future’, we extended the celebrations throughout the month, bringing exciting and educational activities to various grade levels. The events aimed to spark curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of Chemistry’s role in shaping our world. Here is a recap of our vibrant Chemistry Month.
Exploring Chemistry Careers
Students from Grades 9 to 11 had the unique opportunity to learn more about the various Chemistry careers. This session introduced students to the diverse and impactful roles chemists play in industries ranging from healthcare and environmental science to cosmetics and materials innovation.
Grade 9 Highlights
Grade 9 students had a dynamic experience this month, starting with a Chemistry Quiz Competition. The competition saw enthusiastic participation from six creatively named teams: Quantum Queens, Calcium Cuties, CeOs, Atomic Avengers, The Chem Pooks, and Team Lab Rats.
Congratulations to the Atomic Avengers – Jaeyi and Sumedha, who emerged victorious in the Grade 9 Chemistry quiz competition!
“Chemistry month celebrations at Marymount provided such an enriching
opportunity for students to develop their
passion for Chemistry, outside of class. We were able to understand Chemistry’s real-world application when introduced to a wide variety of Chemistry related careers, from Forensic Toxicologists or Analytical Chemists, to working in the World Gold Council (this was definitely one which interested us all!).
– Lia, Grade 9
In addition to the quiz, few Grade 9 students also participated in an experimental session focusing on redox reactions, exploring the fascinating interplay of oxidation and reduction in chemical processes.
Experiments
Grade 8 and Grade 11 students investigated the fascinating world of non-Newtonian fluids, combining fun and Science as they explored materials that challenge the traditional rules of fluid mechanics. Grade 8 students were thrilled by experiments involving dry ice, producing fog, bubbles, and more in a hands-on exploration of sublimation and gas properties. Whereas, Grade 11 students examined the chemical composition of toothpaste and even created their own natural toothpaste, blending Chemistry with practical application.
“By mixing corn starch and water, we created Oobleck, which is a non-Newtonian fluid. When we rested our fingers on top of the Oobleck, they sank beneath the surface. However, when we moved our fingers or applied any force, it behaved just like a solid! We couldn’t stop playing with it!”
– Matilda, Grade 8
Enrichment Day: Colour Chemistry
On Enrichment Day, Grade 6 students explored the world of Colour Chemistry with Ms Lau, Dr Orsi and Ms John. They conducted chromatography experiments with autumn leaves and made natural indicators. The Grade 6 students created beautiful artwork from the pigments extracted from autumn leaves and showcased their creativity.
Grade 12 Chemistry Experiment Competition
One of the highlights of Chemistry Month was the Grade 12 Chemistry Experiment Competition. Five teams showcased their experimental prowess:
- Molrats
- The Drip Squad (Lillian and Doris)
- Acidic Adventures
- Haidilao
- The Myxeium Fusion
The Drip Squad claimed victory, demonstrating both skill and teamwork. Congratulations to Doris and Lillian for their hard-earned win!
Chemistry Dress-up Day
Adding a touch of creativity, students and staff participated in a Chemistry Dress-Up Day, sporting innovative costumes inspired by atoms, molecules, and chemical reactions. The imaginative outfits brought the spirit of Chemistry alive in a vibrant and fun way.
Chemistry Month at Marymount was not just about experiments and competitions; it was a celebration of discovery, teamwork, and the joy of learning. The diverse range of activities ensured students, from Grade 6 to Grade 12, had an opportunity to engage with Chemistry in an exciting and meaningful way.
Thank you to all the students and staff who made this month a success. Together, we have explored how Chemistry truly is shaping the future!
