Mrs Giblin’s Monthly Musing: A Holistic Education

One of the great strengths of a Marymount education is our commitment to developing the whole person. We strive to educate both the heart and the mind through a holistic approach, and in recent weeks, this has been brought to life in a number of meaningful ways across our school community.

In the field of Science, our students have embraced challenge with enthusiasm and determination. At the UK Youth Rocketry Challenge for South West London, three teams represented our school with great enthusiasm and engagement. One team achieved a particularly strong score, with the potential to progress to the national finals. We will know once the regional competitions have concluded.

Similarly, our Grade 11 Biology students took part in the British Biology Olympiad, a rigorous national competition. Every student who entered represented our school brilliantly, with two students achieving a Highly Commended certificate and a Gold certificate. A further two teams of Grade 9 students achieved Gold Level in the CityZen Pollution Control Challenge, organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers, and our Grade 9 and 10 students were awarded Silver and Copper certificates in the Junior Chemistry Challenge. We are so proud of these students’ incredible achievements.

We are delighted to share that Project 29, our Climate Detectives team, has been selected to represent the United Kingdom at the International Climate Detectives Summit, organised by the European Space Agency. This team of nine Grade 9 students undertook their research as part of the Science Service Learning programme, with their work recognised through national selection and subsequently published by the European Space Agency. The summit, which will take place in May at ESA’s Earth Observation Centre in Frascati, Italy, will bring together teams from across Europe to present their findings, collaborate with peers, and engage with leading scientists. This is a remarkable achievement and a wonderful example of our students applying their learning to real-world global challenges.

Alongside these impressive achievements, we have also celebrated an important moment of spiritual growth. This month marked the Confirmation of twelve of our students in a beautiful Mass, shared with families, staff, and student sponsors. It was a joyful and reflective occasion, reminding us of the importance of faith, community, and the spiritual dimension of our school.

Together, these experiences reflect our commitment to nurturing intellectually curious, spiritually grounded, and ambitious young women, equipped to go out into the world with confidence and purpose, continuing to live out the vision of education established by Mother Butler and the RSHM Sisters all those years ago.

With warmest wishes,

Mrs Margaret Giblin – Headmistress
