Schools play a vital, though often underappreciated, role in bringing people from all walks of life together. Every day, within school classrooms, corridors and shared spaces, there is an opportunity to create communities of kindness, respect and understanding.
Schools are among the few places where young people encounter such a wide range of perspectives, experiences and backgrounds. They are places of learning, of course, but they are also places where friendships are formed, confidence is developed and where students begin to both understand themselves and the world around them.
Diversity is central to this experience. When students learn alongside and from people whose stories, cultures and viewpoints differ from their own, they are given the opportunity to develop empathy, curiosity and a genuine appreciation for others. These experiences help to foster those vital communities where differences are not simply tolerated but valued, enriching learning environments for everyone.
The strongest school communities are often built through those simple everyday moments: a word of encouragement from a classmate, support from a teacher, a collaborative project, or opening a door for another. Individually, these moments may appear small. Collectively, they create a sense of belonging that allows individuals and communities to flourish.
Instead of providing reasons why we should be kinder, this week in our newsletter, Marymount would like to share some simple, unprompted acts of kindness that we have witnessed recently:
As our future Grade 12 students begin preparing for their final year, they have recently been given access to their lounge space. Alongside the excitement of decorating and making the area their own, they have introduced a simple but meaningful initiative. Each student has an envelope bearing their name displayed on the wall, inviting classmates to leave messages of encouragement, appreciation and support throughout the year. It is a small gesture, but one that reflects the importance of recognising one another and ensuring that every member of the community feels valued.
Another example has emerged through our website redevelopment project. As part of this process, students have been sharing testimonials about their subjects, teachers and experiences at Marymount. Their reflections have highlighted not only what they enjoy learning, but also the people who have helped shape that journey.
One student affectionately described the Head of Maths as “the GOAT” (Greatest of all time), while another shared how studying Theatre had helped them develop confidence and strengthen their ability to collaborate with others. These comments were not prompted. They were genuine expressions of appreciation. Behind them lies something important: the willingness to recognise the positive influence of others and to celebrate it publicly.
At a time when it can be easy to focus on what separates people, schools have an opportunity, and indeed a responsibility, to model what brings people together. By choosing kindness, celebrating diversity and fostering genuine connections, we help build a community where every individual feels welcomed, valued and empowered to contribute.
