A multilingual programme designed around language, literature and acquisition.

Languages at Marymount

Marymount is a genuinely multilingual school, with language learning embedded throughout the Senior School and Sixth Form. Students follow either Language & Literature or Language Acquisition pathways, allowing them to study at a level that reflects their linguistic background, experience and proficiency. English is the language of instruction, and all students continue to develop their English throughout their time at Marymount International School London.

Students can learn a new language, strengthen their English, maintain and develop their mother tongue, and study literature academically in more than one language. Language learning at Marymount is closely connected to identity, culture, communication, confidence and international-mindedness, with many students progressing towards the IB Bilingual Diploma.

Subjects offered:

Marymount offers two distinct language pathways designed to meet students at the right level of linguistic experience and proficiency. Language & Literature is for students studying a language at a high level of fluency, often as a first or mother tongue, with a focus on analysing texts, producing writing and using language effectively. Language Acquisition is designed for students developing an additional language, with learning centred around the four key communication skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Across Marymount’s language provision, students can study English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin and Spanish, with opportunities varying according to year group, proficiency and pathway. In the MYP, students can also receive support to maintain and develop their mother tongue, while the IB Diploma continues the distinction between Studies in Language & Literature and Language Acquisition.
