The Extended Essay is one of the defining experiences of the International Baccalaureate Programme. Every student undertakes an independent research project  a topic that genuinely interests them, developing the research, writing and critical thinking skills that prepare them for university and beyond.

Why the Extended Essay matters

The Extended Essay is much more than a 4000-word essay.

It is an opportunity for students to pursue an academic passion, investigate a meaningful question and experience genuine independent research. Along the way, students learn how to think critically, evaluate evidence, communicate clearly and manage a substantial academic project from beginning to end.

The Marymount Approach to the Extended Essay

Curiosity Drives Learning

Every Extended Essay begins with a question.

Students are encouraged to explore an area that genuinely interests them, often linked to one of their Higher Level subjects or an interdisciplinary topic that connects multiple disciplines.

Whether analysing literature, investigating scientific phenomena or modelling mathematical problems, every student’s journey is unique.

Individual support throughout

Although the Extended Essay is an independent project, students are never alone. Marymount provides structured support throughout the process, including:

  • Topic development workshops
  • Research guidance
  • Individual supervisors
  • Presentation milestones
  • Writing days
  • Progressive feedback
  • Reflection meetings

Students develop independence while benefitting from expert guidance at every stage.
