Taking Maths to the end of Senior School is an increasing advantage for young women

We spoke to our Chair of Mathematics, Ms Momoko Aoe, about the benefits of taking Maths up to 18 years old for young women.

At Marymount, we are committed to providing our students with the best possible education, and we believe that studying Mathematics until age 18 is an essential part of that. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Maths is a core curriculum subject in our programme, and we recognise its many advantages.

Firstly, Mathematics is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. By studying Mathematics, our students develop analytical and critical thinking skills, which are crucial for success in many areas of life. Mathematics strengthens the logical structure of our thought process and is a transferrable skill that students can use in all fields, math or non-math related. Having mathematical knowledge increases the range of perspectives on non-math related situations/topics, strengthening the depth in which you can understand our world.

We also find that in some cases, many students have yet to determine precisely what career they will have upon graduating from university, let alone in 20 years. By maintaining their foundation in Mathematics, they can access entry-level university math courses that some non-math-related majors will require. Opening as many doors as possible will help widen their options and potentially even future salaries.

Understanding Mathematics provides confidence and independence to individuals in all areas of life. As an all-girls school, we are particularly interested in how this can impact women. Having a solid sense of numbers and functions can transfer to personal finances and interest rates, which can often be target areas for manipulation and control. Without proper understanding or even the confidence to take control of one’s financial situation, it can be nearly impossible for women to feel they can get out of situations where their finances are being abused, whether that be in a relationship or by other external forces. Furthermore, they may be more prone to entering such relationships because they seek support in these areas. We want to provide our students with the proper toolkit to take control of their lives as they move into the real world and face any curves life throws at them.

We also feel it is essential to allow our students to have continued exposure to STEM fields so that they can enter the workforce in these areas. Women are severely underrepresented in STEM, but it’s not due to lack of ability. Throughout history, there are many examples of men taking credit for women’s work. It takes a society to make that work and another community of people to right this. Having more women represented in these professions is a first step. Women need to gain the confidence to stand up for what they believe in and have accomplished but also feel that they deserve the right to receive recognition for their work.

At Marymount, we believe that our students can expand their horizons and reach their full potential by studying Mathematics. Whether they aspire to a career in Science, Engineering, or Economics or simply want to develop their logical and cognitive skills, studying Mathematics until age 18 is an excellent way to prepare for the future. We are proud to be able to provide this education and be part of their journey towards a brighter future.
